From the Executive Director's Desk

Dear Participants and Families,

For so many of us, spring is a time of renewal, cleaning and organization. Here at RCL we have taken on these tasks, preparing to renew our Family Participation Policy, cleaning up the office (moving items to our new storage space graciously donated to RCL by Public Storage) and organizing our new phone and computer information systems. All this effort should help us to more efficiently serve our participants and families as our agency grows. As we meet the demands of organizational issues, the biggest hurdle to our growth has become visibility. Like a number of small agencies, we realize that many more people with disabilities could benefit from our services, but do they know RCL is here? Do they know that we charge No Fees? This is how you can help, putting out the word. If you are aware of someone you think should know about us, or might benefit from RCL's services, encourage them to call us and we will be happy to assess them for services, send them more information or provide referrals. RCL could use your help in another area, finding a larger, more convenient office site. We currently occupy 1200 handicap accessible square feet. Our lease runs out at the end of July 2001, if you have some ideas please let us know. Also for those of you who are looking for a more active role in policy making, we are currently looking for motivated Board Members. It is my hope that some of you read this and choose to take a more active role in our mission. With your continued support we can help people with disabilities meet their goals for independence and increasing authorship in their lives.

Robert Walsh, Psy.D.

Thank You !

The Third Annual Gala was a huge success. It goes without saying that any special fundraising event cannot proceed successfully without the direct involvement of many people. Al Lifchultz, chairperson, and the fundraising committee along with family and friends of RCL, Dr. Walsh and his staff, Carol Ann Coyle, President of the Board, and Board members, selflessly shared their time and energy to make sure our gala was a resounding success. There were 220 people who attended the gala and RCL grossed $44,571.00 and netted $26,680.00. A fundraising committee is being formed and plans are being made for next year's gala. Dorothy Heitman has graciously accepted the position of chairperson.

PARENT & FAMILY ASSOCIATION GROUP

This group was formed out of the need to have a place so that parents of RCL's clients and family members can meet, talk about issues and work toward a common goal. Dr. Walsh and Geanie Kuehnau co-lead the meeting and it has already met twice The Parent & Family Association meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the RCL office, at 7:30 pm. It is open to all family members of RCL clients. Next meeting 6/6/01 Why would you want to get involved? Because this group is your opportunity to show direct support for the services and programs that RCL provides for your family member. It is an opportunity to share resources, new ideas, and plans that directly impact the many challenges that face RCL. Just from the two meetings, one of the members shared information regarding the "Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Program"- a program in which folks in partnership with the Chicago Park District, provide classroom and on water instruction on Lake Michigan for the disabled community. Sailing is enjoyed aboard uniquely designed 20-feet sailboats. Friend and family members of the disabled are also welcome to join the classes and sailing activities. On Saturday, June 2, from 10 AM to 4 PM an Open House at Burnham Harbor will take place. We can do this as a group if enough persons show interest; therefore, if you are interested please call the RCL office. By the way, at every meeting we share goodies, like brownies and cookies. Shirley Raff, parent and volunteer who is our baker, brought in some cookies at the last meeting and number of people requested the recipe. Shirley agreed to share the recipe for her "Sugarless Cookies" the recipe makes about 30 cookies.

2 sticks of margarine
1 package of dry yeast
½ cup warm water
2 ¼ cups flour
1 t. vanilla
14 sweet & low packets
½ t cinnamon

Combine margarine, add flour and alternate with yeast mixture. And add vanilla. Using teaspoon, make balls the size of walnuts. Combine sweet & low with the cinnamon and roll the balls in the sugar mixture. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Using a fork, make crisscross marks on tops of cookies, which will flatten them slightly. Bake at 375 degreed oven, 15 to 20 minutes and enjoy!
